Comicbook creator Joe Simon dies

Joe Simon, who along with Jack Kirby co-created Captain America and was one of the comicbook industry's most revered writers, artists and editors, died Wednesday, Dec. 14 in NY City after a brief illness. He was 98.Simon and Kirby, a comicbook artist and illustrator, worked hand-in-glove for years. From their fertile imaginations sprang a trove of characters, heroes, villains and misfits for several comicbook companies in their Golden Age of the 1940s, including Timely, the forerunner of today's Marvel Comics; National Periodicals, the forerunner of DC; and Fawcett. The characters the two created included the Newsboy Legion, the Boy Commandos and Blue Bolt."Blue Bolt was the first strip Jack and I worked on together, beginning in 1940. He was a science fiction swashbuckler I created for Curtis Publishing, the company that put out the Saturday Evening Post," Simon told the AP earlier this year. "They had decided to jump on the comicbook bandwagon. Jack joined me with the second issue. Like Captain America, Blue Bolt got his powers from an injection, long before the baseball players were doing it."For Timely, the duo created Captain America, debuting on the cover of "Captain America Comics" No. 1 with the champion of liberty throwing a solid right-hook at Hitler in December 1940, a year before the U.S. entered WWII."Jack and I read the newspapers and knew what was going on over in Europe. And there he was -- Adolf Hitler, with his ridiculous moustache, high-pitched ranting and goose-stepping followers. He was the perfect bad guy, much better than anything we could have made up, so what we needed was to create his ultimate counterpart," Simon told the AP."Cap is one of the great comicbook icons, and as dangerous as the world is today -- more than it was in the 1940s -- we need him around more than ever to act as our moral compass," Simon said.Ed Brubaker, who has drawn critical acclaim for his recent runs writing Captain America for Marvel, called Simon a "pioneer in comics, a mover-and-shaker and probably far ahead of his time."He said in an email that he even revamped a Simon-created character for his first assignment at DC."I personally owe my career in a few ways to Joe Simon -- my first DC gig was a revamp of his 'Prez,' the teenage president, and I've spent almost eight years writing Captain America for Marvel," Brubaker said. "It's a sad day."Simon wrote "Prez: First Teen President" for DC in 1973-74 as a four-issue series.Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Entertainment, parent company of DC Comics, called Simon a "creative virtuoso" whose "many contributions to DC Comics, both as a writer and an editor, are legion and will continue to be cherished by longtime fans, this one included."Mark Evanier, a comic industry historian and Kirby biographer, noted that besides being able to write and draw, Simon knew how to edit comics."Joe himself was the first great real editor who brought to comics skills he'd learned elsewhere and had some perception of how to put a magazine together and how to make a professional looking publication," Evanier said Thursday. "He had some business acumen. He knew how to talk to publishers, he knew how to make deals."He also knew the market, Evanier said, noting that Simon and Kirby plunged into creating horror, crime, humor and romance comicbooks in the aftermath of WWII.Simon said earlier this year that creating the romance comics was a high point for him and Kirby because they "negotiated to own half of the property," something that had been an uncertain prospect in the industry."I'd like to think that we showed today's comicbook writers and artists how they can do more than just make a living producing comicbooks and hold onto the fruits of their labors," he said.Screen adaptations of "Captain America" include the first bigscreen version in 1944, a TV series in 1966 and this year's "Captain America: The First Avenger," on which Simon and Kirby received credit as creators of the comicbooks.Simon's autobiography, "Joe Simon, My Life in Comics," was published in June.Simon, who was born in Rochester, N.Y., is survived by two sons, three daughters and eight grandchildren. Nonprofit theaters spy hope

After a tough couple of years, things are finally looking up for legit nonprofits, but they're still living hand-to-mouth on a day-to-day liquidity basis. Those are among the findings of a couple of economic reports recently released by Theater Communications Group, the grant-making, advocacy and networking org of U.S. theater nonprofits. To judge by the commercial realm of Broadway, the theater biz has proven resilient enough to resist most of the downward pull of the 2008 financial crisis and the recession that followed. Witness the Main Stem's $1 billion in sales last season, as well as rising average ticket prices that make it clear that despite any belt-tightening, consumers are still willing to shell out for the hits they want to see.For most legit nonprofits, however, it's been a different story over the past couple of years, with companies around the country organizing emergency fundraisers and troupes paring back activities, sometimes ruthlessly, in an effort to keep afloat.According to TCG's Theater Facts 2010, the latest installment of an annual economic survey the org has been conducting for 30 years, there are signs of hope, particularly in a metric TCG calls the Change in Unrestricted Net Assets, which measures all forms of a theater's income (ticket sales, contributions, endowment earning, etc.) vs. all expenses. Among the 113 theaters that participated in the survey in each of the past five years, the average CUNA inched up into the black after a couple of years in the red.Growth is attributable, according to the report, to an uptick in single-ticket income (largely due to price increases) along with a rebounding stock market, which helped boost cash yielded by endowment funds. On the other hand, theaters' average working capital -- the cash on hand to deal with day-to-day financial obligations -- has ended up in the negative over each of the past five years. To a degree, such cash-flow worries are nothing new -- legiters are fond of saying that in the funding-strapped nonprofit world, every day is a recession -- but the trend became more severe in 2009 and 2010.Among the other downturns traced in the report: a decrease in corporate, state and local funding; and a decline in subscription income of 15% over a five-year period. Over that same five years, overall attendance at resident productions fell 3.6%, with a 1.4% reduction in the numbers of performances offered. But among the list of encouraging indicators, according to TCG exec director Teresa Eyring, is a major rise in attendance at developmental events such as readings and workshops as well as pre-show talks, lectures and latenight cabarets. To her mind, the popularity of such behind-the-curtain events reps avid audience interest in multiple facets of theater. "That bodes well for the health of theater overall," she says.To go along with the Theater Facts 2010, which analyzes numbers collected from the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2010, TCG also released the results of an online survey of member theaters called "Taking Your Fiscal Pulse -- Fall 2011."According to that more current barometer, 63% of theaters surveyed broke even or ended up in the black, with 74% logging expenses that were at or below budget."It looks like the numbers are holding in 2011 as well," Eyring says. Best Movie Ensemble Of 2011: Vote For Your Favorite

If a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, a movie's cast is only great as its worst actor. This year we saw some of 2011's best films held together, not by one stand-out star, but by a group of amazing actors working together to make one great movie. As we here at MTV News start to look back on the year of movies, we want your input for what you think are the best films of the year. Today, we kick things off for the award for Best Ensemble. Come back every day this week for a new poll and a new chance to decide which movies ruled the multiplex this year. "Bridesmaids" It only takes one viewing of the instant classic bridal boutique scene to know that this is an ensemble movie. Melissa McCarthy stole scenes throughout, with a star-making performance. Kristen Wiig held the film together with a great script and leading role, and Rose Byrne was the bitch we all loved to hate. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" For a movie ten years in the making, it was essential that every character got their moment. The big three may have been the focal point, but your favorite character was almost guaranteed to get their own moment to shine. Whether it was Hagrid's heart-wrenching march from the forest or Mrs. Weasley's perfect curse word, everyone shined in this epic finale. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" As the series begins it steps towards a conclusion, we begin to see every character heading toward the end of their story. Bella fights for her unborn child. Edward struggles to keep Bella alive. Jacob wrestles with the uncontrollable urge to remove his shirt. The movies may be about romantic love, but everyone involved is surrounded by a family of supporting characters ready to fight for them. "Horrible Bosses" With a title like that, they better have some follow through, and they certainly did. I don't know if anyone will look at Jennifer Aniston the same way. The combination of the bosses from hell with their lovable underlings made for one of the year's best comedies and casts. "The Help" With such a complex story line and cast of character, the adaptation of the best-selling book lived or died with the performance of its cast. Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain turned in their usual fantastic work, while Octavia Spenser and Viola Davis earned Oscar talk. Vote for your favorite in the poll below! Did we forget someone? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

REVIEW: Fassbender and Mortensen Duke It Out, Amicably, in A Dangerous Method

David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method is probably the most fun you’ll ever have watching a movie about Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud duking it out — and nurturing a deep-rooted but fragile friendship — in early 20th century Austria and Switzerland. In fact, when I first saw Viggo Mortensen done up in his trim little Freud beard, I nearly laughed out loud — not because he looked ridiculous, but because he looked so right. Mortensen has become one of Cronenberg’s go-to guys in recent years, and you can see why: Even in a period film like this one — a picture that runs the heavy risk of being ponderous and stiff — he can slip himself into the scenery with a “Don’t mind me, here in my Sigmund Freud getup” naturalness. That’s not true of everyone in the picture, particularly Keira Knightley, who has to navigate a particularly difficult entrance: Knightley plays Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman who would go on to become a renowned psychoanalyst herself, but when we first see her, she’s a hysterical creature being carted off to a hospital, kicking and screaming, in a horse-drawn carriage. Michael Fassbender’s Jung is the doctor in charge of treating her, and she’s in the midst of a fit when he first sits her down: Her neck is drawn long and tight, her eyes pop, her jaw juts out so far it looks as if it might detach from her face. It’s a lot of acting — maybe not good acting — but it sure gets the point across. Knightley gets better scene by scene, and the movie does too: Cronenberg is working from a script by Christopher Hampton (the movie is based on his play, The Talking Cure, as well as on John Kerr’s book A Most Dangerous Method), and his control over the material is both masterful and confident in its lightness. The picture is handsome — it was shot by Peter Suschitzky — but not stately in the deadly way. Turn-of-the-century Vienna looks like a happening place here, bustling with horse-drawn carriages and men and ladies walking briskly in, respectively, their dark homburgs and fluted skirts. Somehow, Suschitzky makes it look alive and not like a 3-D souvenir postcard. In short, Cronenberg has made an elegant film, with spanking. There’s some mildly kinky sex in A Dangerous Method, but Cronenberg makes it neither exploitive nor so tasteful that it loses its charge. He’s hip to the allure of the forbidden, but he doesn’t get carried away by it, nor does he assess any judgment — kind of like your therapist, come to think of it. (One of the movie’s jauntiest sections involves Jung’s “treatment” of Dr. Otto Gross, a hedonist sex maniac played by a terrifically scruffy Vincent Cassel.) Nor does Cronenberg make the mistake of thinking he’s writing a term paper. He’s a skilled and astute filmmaker, but he has an unfortunate tendency to take himself too seriously. His disciplined offhandedness is key here, and his actors thrive in the atmosphere he’s created for them. Fassbender has the great gift of being able to forget how good-looking he is: His Jung is gentlemanly, thoughtful, dutiful, as upstanding as the starched white collar he wears. It all goes kerflooey when he’s tempted by forbidden fruit, and Fassbender works that transition beautifully: His facial features are so classically composed — he looks so preternaturally stable and trustworthy — that when you see him play a character torn between intellect and the sexual impulse, you understand the costs involved. Through the course of the movie Knightley, as the woman who most challenges Jung both in and out of the bedroom — he clearly doesn’t get the same kick in the pants from his aristocratic wife, played very prettily by Sarah Gadon — turns her stilted, phony-Russian diction from a liability to a strength. By the end, she’s believable as a woman whose intelligence is inextricably bound with her awkwardness: Her Sabina Spielrein is never quite at home in the world, which gives her a better perch from which to observe it. But the exchanges between Fassbender’s Jung and Mortensen’s Freud are the movie’s greatest pleasures. Fassbender is the straight man to Mortensen’s sly jokester. At their first meeting, Freud listens patiently as Jung outlines Spielrein’s symptoms in great detail. He offers one observation, which Jung rejects; he offers another that Jung also pooh-poohs. “Well,” he says, after waiting one patient beat, “perhaps it’s a Russian thing.” In A Dangerous Method, Cronenberg takes this meeting of minds and finds the crackle in the connection. It’s never dull for a moment, which is an achievement for a movie about two guys who built whole therapeutic disciplines around the acts of talking and listening. Cronenberg is attuned to the inherent drama, and the pitfalls, in what these men did. As a filmmaker, he’s as good a listener as he is a talker. Within the Bard to Bean without missing a beat

'Johnny British Reborn'Talk about pointed in the sublime for the absurd British composer Ilan Eshkeri's two latest scores straddle two different cell phone industry's: the savage Shakespearean arena of "Coriolanus," starring (and directed by) super-serious thespian Take advantage of Fiennes as well as the zany, spy-spoof arena of "Johnny British Reborn," starring Rowan Atkinson, also called Mr. Bean."I've always loved mixing up,Inch states Eshkeri, whose varied credits -- "The Youthful Victoria," "Layer Cake" and "Kick-Ass" -- reveal his eclectic tastes, "as well as the different challenges involved."Eshkeri certainly faced several on "Coriolanus." "First, Take advantage of hadn't experienced the scoring process, but all the editing and publish was quite daunting and mysterious to him," according to him. "And I'd play him ideas, nevertheless it increased being apparent he didn't want any music whatsoever -- or just the minimum."Eventually the composer and first-time director compromised around the minimal, frequently pulsing score that's largely driven by percussion and brass. "Because he's a soldier, Initially when i first suggested a lone trumpet -- no tune, no tune, merely a single note -- for a lot of cues, that was insane enough for him he made the decision into it,Inch Eshkeri states. "And then we used taiko drums, timpani, and knocked random products of metal and coiled springs."Despite the fact that final score is "100% a classical score, because it's all regulated controlled prepared, it provides a punk-rock edge which Take advantage of really loved ultimately," he adds. "It's incredibly stark, nevertheless it labored."Eshkeri went directly from that has to scoring "Johnny British Reborn" for Atkinson and director Oliver Parker. "It couldn't are actually more different simply because they wanted lots of music, a regular orchestral approach and lots of hummable tunes," according to him. "It absolutely was about tunes, too as with a sizable movie similar to this, you aren't getting that greatly nowadays, therefore i was thrilled to offer the chance."Ironically, Eshkeri's lush, tuneful distribution, they overlaid getting a rock 'n' roll combo, would frequently be belittled "as not melodic enough," he unveils. "I written several primary styles, plus it was tough to really nail it, when you are used in the written text idiom, and also you will not desire to be too derivative, however, you cannot deny it either."As well as the versions, Eshkeri found coping with Fiennes and Atkinson "very similar. Both are perfectionists, and both drove me completely insane, although it's a good madness because it will make you stick out." Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

Desplat's impossible pace propelled into higher gear

'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close''Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2''Carnage'The astonishingly prolific Alexandre Desplat scored the year's biggest box office hit ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2"); one of the year's most acclaimed films ("The Tree of Life"); and a last-minute entry ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close") that could be on the list of year-end contenders. Those are just three of the six Desplat films that will have seen domestic release before the end of December. The others: George Clooney's political drama "The Ides of March," Roman Polanski's dark comedy "Carnage," and the little-seen immigrant drama "A Better Life."As if that wasn't enough, the Paris-based composer also penned a theme for "My Week With Marilyn" and scored two other films that didn't get an American release: the action-adventure "Largo Winch II" and the French period piece "La Fille du puisatier.""Extremely Loud" is the wild card in the group. When Variety talked to Desplat in earlier this month, the composer was still in the midst of writing 70 minutes of music for director Stephen Daldry's much-anticipated 9/11 film, which was to be recorded starting Nov. 10 in NY.Desplat is a last-minute replacement for an earlier score by Nico Muhly ("The Reader"). "I got a phone call one day saying, 'Are you free -- now -- to work on a crazy deadline?' I could not say no, especially for Stephen Daldry." Desplat described his score as variously "propelling, emotional, tender and sorrowful," but few will hear it before mid-December screenings.Desplat, a four-time Oscar nominee (for such films as "The Queen" and "The King's Speech"), was named Film Composer of the Year for the third year in a row at this year's Ghent Film Festival, dedicated to honoring composers.Exactly what awards-season voters will choose among the composer's output -- and more precisely, what the Academy music-branch executive committee will decide is eligible -- is hard to guess. In all likelihood, the Acad will disqualify Desplat's "Tree of Life" score as running afoul of the rule that prohibits scores "diluted by the use of tracked themes or pre-existing music." Although Desplat wrote more than an hour of contemplative, impressionistic music for director Terrence Malick, only 14 minutes wound up in the final cut (the other 86 minutes consist mostly of classical excerpts, including Mahler, Bach, Brahms, Smetana, Mozart, Respighi and a healthy dose of Berlioz).Composer and director talked frequently over a three-year period. "I read the script, then I saw some footage, but I never saw even a reel. I saw scenes, shots, bits and pieces. I never wrote to picture," Desplat says, noting that he was always aware that his contribution would be part of a complex mosaic consisting of many composers' works. He remains in awe of Malick, whom he declares "a genius," and offered the hope that "someday, somebody will play the film with the CD," just to see how it might have played with more of his original music. The emotional "Harry Potter" finale is another question mark for Acad voters. In this case, 92 of the film's 104 minutes of music are Desplat's (the remainder, mostly John Williams themes from the first film), but as the concluding half of a two-part film, will the branch committee declare it not an "original score"?Potter fans worldwide, who used phrases like "tonal majesty" and "richly layered aural landscape" in reviewing Desplat's work, would not take kindly to a disqualification and likely cite Howard Shore's Oscar-winning third score in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy as a precedent.Desplat used a 110-piece London orchestra and 80-voice choir to close the Potter saga on a powerful note. In fact, he overdubbed his 60 strings as often as four times, "giving a great richness to the sound and to the counterpoint."The startling find of the "Part 2" score, however, is Desplat's use of an almost impossibly pure solo voice to suggest the ghost of Harry's mother, Lily.It turns out to be that of Mai Fujisawa, the daughter of composer Joe Hisaishi, whose scores for the Japanese animated films "Princess Mononoke," "Spirited Away" and others are international favorites. (She was singing on her father's scores from the age of 4.)Desplat's alternately brooding and propulsive score for "The Ides of March" was the result of working on "Syriana" (on which Clooney was a co-producer) and meeting him later on "The Fantastic Mr. Fox.""George has a great sense of collaboration," he says. "He comes with ideas and then you have to give them shape, make them evolve and blossom."The composer worked twice this year with Roman Polanski (on the heels of their much-admired 2010 collaboration on "The Ghost Writer"). He penned music for the documentary "Roman Polanski: A Memoir" and for the adaptation of Yasmina Reza's play "God of Carnage.""It's four people in an apartment, and they talk a lot," notes the composer. "I said to Roman, you can't have music inside the film. It's got to book-end the film, just opening and closing, so that's what we did."Desplat describes his "Carnage" music as "witty and angry," like the play. But its brevity (seven minutes total) makes it an unlikely awards candidate.Similarly, "A Better Life," with its evocative acoustic-guitar solos for Los Angeles' Mexican-American community, was a personal favorite for the composer but its modest box office and low profile are awards impediments.Meanwhile, Desplat toils away on "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."Asked when he plans to take a vacation, he answers: "I am going to stop. One day." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Jones On For Warren Beatty's New Pic

The untitled Howard Hughes dramaLast June, word began to leak out about Warren Beatty's next planned project, a film about the live and loves of reclusive tycoon Howard Hughes. Little has been heard about the film since then, but Beatty has been busy tracking down a cast, with Felicity Jones now in line to play the female lead. The film, which still doesn't have an official title (or indeed, all of its financing in place), will chronicle part of Hughes life story, with Beatty directing and playing the lead. Jones, last seen in The Tempest, will be a young woman who falls for the businessman's driver and assistant, but then develops a thing for the man himself. Judging by Beatty's casting, this is set a little later in his life than, say, The Aviator. As for the driver, Beatty is still narrowing his choices down, though Justin Timberlake and Somewhere's Alden Ehrenreich are apparently among those under consideration. There's also a chance that the likes of Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin and Annette Bening (AKA Mrs Beatty) could show up on screen.Beatty's been working on this one for ages and is looking to get it shooting next year. It'll mark his first directing gig since 1998's Bulworth.

'Erin Burnett OutFront': What the Critics Are Saying

This week, former CNBC co-host Erin Burnett debuted her new primetime CNN program, Erin Burnett OutFront, and the critics made their opinions known as the week progressed.our editor recommendsCNN's Erin Burnett Reveals New Show Name, Promo (Video)Piers Morgan, Wolf Blitzer Offer CNN's Erin Burnett Advice Ahead of Show's Premiere (Videos)Erin Burnett on Her New CNN Show: I'm Not Going to Pay Attention to RatingsIts Official: Erin Burnett Joins CNN Her premiere on Monday caused an uproar among members of Hollywood and critics alike, when Burnett paid a visit to Occupy Wall Street and mocked those who were taking part. In fact, Media Matters says Burnett should apologize for the "cheap-shot report." That caused filmmaker Michael Moore to express dismay, which in turn, was used as fodder on Tuesday night's program. The Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik wrote in a post that went up Wednesday evening, "By now, there is already a consensus bilding about Burnett based on her trip to Occupy Wall Street, and none of it is good for her or CNN's .. latest 'adventure' in weeknight programming." "At a time when many people come to cable news looking for someone they can trust to help lead them out of the economic nightmare this country has plunged them into," he writes, "she comes across as self-satisfied, smug, priviledged [sic] and feeling not one whit of their pain." Zurawik pointed out that though Burnett's "Seriously" segment is similar to Cooper's "The RidicuList," Cooper "earned a kind of moral (or, at least, cultural) authority through his work as a journalist on CNN" to do such a thing. Forbes' Eric Jackson called Burnett "too dismissive and condescending of these [Occupy Wall Street] protesters." He said later, "Erin should quit grinning and winking at what a bunch of rubes these Occupy Wall Street proesters are. She would do well to remember that quite a few of these country bumpkins ... are actually watching her network. Seriously." Salon's Glenn Greenwald traced Burnett's job at Goldman Sachs to her CNBC career to her joining CNN, pointing out her ties to Wall Street. "It's the opposite of surprising that large corporations which own media outlets want to hire people to play the role of journalist on the TV who are slavishly devoted to their culture and their agenda," he writes. "But that's the point: the pretense that these people are "objective journalists" delivering opinion-free facts is so discredited that they should just stop pretending. It's embarrassing already. CNN issued a statement to the Atlantic Wire following the criticisms, saying, "We support Erin and the OutFront team and we respect that there will be a range of opinions on any given story."
